Juneteenth National Independence Day https://www.fulcolibrary.org/blogs/post/juneteenth-national-independence-day/ Fri, 30 May 2025 19:26:40 +0000 https://www.fulcolibrary.org/?p=9550172 Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It is centered around Texas where the last people were freed. The first official celebration happened on the 1-year anniversary, where it was known as “Jubilee Day”. [1]  As the celebrations become a part of Texas culture, other states picked it up as symbol of freedom for African Americans nationwide.  It became a state holiday in 1980. Opal Lee, sometimes called the "Grandmother of Juneteenth" led the charge to making Juneteenth a federal holiday. [3] Through a combination of symbolic walks of 2.5 miles from Texas to the White House, petitions and community engagement, she ensured that for years the topic of Juneteenth was on the public's radar. Eventually, in 2021 a federal holiday with the official name “Juneteenth National Independence Day” set in place by the act of the same name. Opal Lee was in attendance at the bill's signing. [2, 3]  This event is now even celebrated internationally as a showcase of solidarity and community worldwide.

There are often celebrations and events throughout Atlanta in celebration of Juneteenth. One event is Juneteenth Atlanta, which has a parade and music festival. More information is available here: https://www.juneteenthatl.com/.  In the meantime, check out these books about the history of Juneteenth.

Celebrating Memorial Day https://www.fulcolibrary.org/blogs/post/celebrating-memorial-day/ Fri, 02 May 2025 15:26:15 +0000 https://www.fulcolibrary.org/?p=9549216 Every year since 1868, Memorial Day has been observed as a day to remember and honor our fallen heroes who served in the Armed Forces. Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May. This day was known as Decoration Day at first and was proclaimed by Commander-in-Chief John Logan as a way to remember all the lives lost in the Civil War. It was called Decoration Day because this was a time that people used to decorate the graves of those who died with flowers. What started out as day to celebrate those who lost their lives in the Civil War is now meant to honor all who laid down their lives while in service.

Please feel free to check out the list below for books about various war veterans and their heroic acts in remembrance of this special day.

Central Artist Corner Presents: Billy Clifton-Strawn https://www.fulcolibrary.org/blogs/post/central-artist-corner-presents-billy-clifton-strawn/ Fri, 11 Apr 2025 15:10:27 +0000 https://www.fulcolibrary.org/?p=9548170 Billy Clifton-Strawn is a self-taught visual artist specializing in digital media. Embracing the moniker "Created in Pixels," he produces art that resonates across generations, challenging societal tendencies to overlook LGBTQIA+ elders. His work is characterized by a fusion of original photography, digital compositing, and extensive digital painting, resulting in unique mixed-media pieces.

Artist Statement:

Billy Clifton-Strawn’s work explores the themes of identity, transformation, and the sublime in his artistic expression. Through a dynamic use of mixed media, digital monitors, pigmented prints, poly tapestries, and digital prints, Clifton-Strawn’s creations become a visual exploration of the human spirit’s resilience, celebrating both the fragility and enduring strength of life.

Each piece invites the viewer to contemplate the journey of fragmented identity toward unity, as figures intertwine with organic forms, floral motifs, and celestial imagery. These elements blur the boundaries between self and universe, highlighting the interconnectedness between the human spirit, nature, and the cosmos. Clifton-Strawn’s ethereal compositions and surreal visuals create spaces where transcendence becomes tangible, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary.

This body of work is both a meditation on human vulnerability and a celebration of the ephemeral beauty of existence. The integration of natural and imagined motifs evokes a deeper connection to the natural world, inviting viewers to reflect on their own moments of profound self-realization and connection. Through these works, art becomes a portal, urging us to embrace our journey toward wholeness and transcendence.
